The Blooming of the Starlaces
Feb. 28th, 2005 02:20 amThe night is beautiful. The night is dark and the buds of the starlaces are beginning to glow. They will bloom soon, perhaps in a few hours.
The girls at the Dark Star said the flowers reminded them of fireflies. I don’t know how I feel about flying insects that glow green in the night. From their descriptions, they sound magnificent but I think I would be more comfortable with glass between me and them.
The blooming of the starlaces here on Davo is well worth the trip to see. The plant has wide, feathery leaves and tall stalks of the darkest green. Through the spring the buds grow to the size of an apple. Then one night you look out and notice the buds are glowing like a pale haze. Within hours the petals begin to open revealing the inner light. Many Centauri describe it as being comparable to watching the birth of a star. (Hence their name)
“You will be home just in time to see the starlaces bloom.” There has not been enough rain this year. Had there been enough rain, he would have been right. They would have bloomed the first night I was home. I am standing on the balcony, gazing out into the gardens waiting for the buds of the starlace to open and for the first time since I left Babylon 5, I think I miss Londo.
