Influence

I thought perhaps Trakis had the most influence on my life. Over the long term perhaps, I became an adult in his ownership. I spent years where everything I did was because he had demanded it from me. I also thought of Ambassador Mollari, he had given me freedom, compassion, forgivness and perhaps even love. If it is the most influential person at any given moment, he would be that person. While both of these men have influenced my life and greatly changed who I am, there is a woman who has defined who I am. To me that is influence, when you look at yourself and you see pieces of another staring back.

My mother, Deljah Tyree, is one of those women, who can walk into any room and it grows silent; every eye turning to see her. She is strong and proud with an otherworldly grace. Her stride is somewhere between stunningly feminine and unnervingly predatory. She has eyes of the blue, night sky moments before it turns black and her hair, red as the heart of a fire. At times, she is subtly manipulative but in a moment can become a liati (the Centauri equivalent of a lion, only smaller and infinitely more agile) poised to tear out your throat. In addition, her sense of justice and retribution is terrifying; I would hesitate to wish it on my worst enemy.

Her life has been devoted to the preservation of Centauri culture. Music, dance and poetry have always brought her joy. When she sings, there are no words for her voice. It seems boundless and ethereal. As a child, my brother said she had sung before Centauri court and that her voice caused some of them to cry. I think it is another of his stories, but if any voice could do such a thing it would be hers. Despite all of her artistic talent she would rather rely on her other skills when working through the social ranks.

She is kind, gentle and protective when it is most needed. My mother always has the right words to comfort or encourage those around her. She refused to have a nurse maid hired for me as is traditional, insisting that she would send any such woman hired out the nearest exit. (Even the second story window I am told.) I admire her for this because having so much time to learn from her is one of the greatest boons I have ever received.

She has taught me to be who I am. (Much to the dismay of my father and his first wife.) I admire everything she is and often fancy that she is a living image of Centauri women from ages past.
